Yellow jacket ground bees8/30/2023 ![]() Yellowjackets use vegetable fibers from trees and shrubs, chewed and mixed with saliva, to produce a paper-like material for nest construction. Adults of some species are beneficial to man because they prey on flies and other insects. They can cause structural damage to a home when they construct nests in walls or attics. In the late summer months when yellowjacket populations increase they can create a nuisance in parks by scavenging for food from picnic and barbeque areas. This can cause additional yellowjackets to attack. Stinging and injured yellowjackets release a chemical alarm pheromone that attracts other worker yellowjackets. Unlike honeybees, yellowjackets do not leave a stinger imbedded in the sting site therefore they can sting numerous times. When a nest is disturbed yellowjackets can inflict multiple stings that are painful and may be life threatening to individuals hypersensitive to the venom. These species build their nests in underground holes, attics, and walls of homes. They can also build nests in rodent burrows, tree cavities or ground holes. If it is not possible to drill from the inside, the drilling can be done outside. Drill small holes directly into the nest from inside of the structure. If you are not sure exactly where the nest is located, use a listening device to hone in as close as possible to the exact location. ![]() Such nests are best treated by drilling into the infested void and injecting the nest with Delta Dust. Sometimes yellow jackets will nest in various elements of a home or structure, such as ceiling and wall voids, in the eaves behind fascia board, soffits, in hollow cement blocks, and inside excavated wood galleries.
